Cover two images to view one at a time.

To the human eye changing images at this speed gives the impression of motion. In the British Isles 25 television still pictures are transmitted every second. The reason for 25 frames per second is due to our electrical system which operates at 50 cycles per second, and that is the same at the BBC as it is in every home in the country. The "mains electricity" that powers the television cameras also powers the televisions in our homes.

So television handles 50 "interlaced" halves of an image every second. This gives an overall frame rate of 25 full frames per second.

For the web the frame rate is often dropped to around 5 frames per second.
